New open-source software 4C for medical and industrial simulations

In the medical field, 4C enables complex simulations of human organs such as the heart, lungs, and musculoskeletal system. Using computer tomography (CT) scans, the software allows for patient-specific analyses, assisting doctors in evaluating ventilation strategies for artificially ventilated patients or studying the impact of high blood pressure on heart function. 

Key applications in medicine include: 

• Cardiology: Understanding changes in the heart due to high blood pressure. 

• Pulmonology: Optimizing ventilation strategies for intensive care patients. 

• Musculoskeletal Research: Analyzing joint and bone structures for better treatment planning. 

Beyond healthcare, 4C plays a crucial role in engineering and industrial applications. Engineers use the software to model the interaction between solid mechanics and electrochemistry, which is essential in fields such as battery technology and additive manufacturing (3D printing). 

Industrial applications include: 

• Battery Optimization: Simulating fluid flows and electrochemical interactions to enhance battery performance. 

• Additive Manufacturing: Improving material properties through particle size and distribution analysis. 

• Structural Mechanics: Enhancing the durability and efficiency of mechanical components. 

The software is available free of charge under the LGPL license on GitHub, allowing developers in research centers, universities, and companies to integrate 4C into their proprietary systems without disclosing their source code. 

Scientists and engineers worldwide are invited to contribute to the ongoing development of 4C. “4C offers unique capabilities for advanced multiphysics simulations. I am looking forward to seeing how it will serve now after its open-source release the academic community and industry alike,” says Prof Christian Cyron, one of the project coordinators.
