Two main categories: Medical steel and implant steel
Two main types of steel are used in medical technology: Medical steel and implant steel. Medical steel, also known as surgical steel, is usually a martensitic stainless steel and is particularly hard, stiff and resistant to heat and acids. These properties make it ideal for surgical instruments that require precise cuts and have to withstand many sterilization cycles.
Implant steel, on the other hand, is mainly used in prostheses and other implantable medical devices. These stainless steels undergo an austenitic manufacturing process, which makes them particularly strong and corrosion-resistant. As implants are exposed to extreme conditions in the human body, they must not only be able to withstand mechanical stress, but also be biocompatible. This means that the body accepts the implants without rejecting them as foreign bodies.
